Le rhinocéros indien est la plus grande espèce de rhinocéros d’Asie. Il a déjà été commun à tout le nord du sous-continent indien et il se distingue par sa corne unique et sa peau s’apparentant à une armure.
Il a l’air particulièrement robuste, mais cela ne l’a pas empêché de frôler la disparition au début du 20e siècle. Grâce au succès d’efforts de conservation, les populations ont augmenté jusqu’à presque 3600 individus dans le nord-est de l’Inde et dans les prairies du Teraï, au Népal. Les efforts doivent cependant être maintenus, car dans un paysage dominé par l’homme, le rhinocéros indien vit tout près des zones cultivées et il en résulte de fréquents conflits avec les humains. Le braconnage pour le commerce illégal des cornes de rhinocéros est encore aussi une menace à leur survie.
